We see athletes as the modern gladiators. We admire them for their strength, skill and dedication. We also admire medicine for it's advancements. What I wouldn't like to admire in an athlete is medicine. Another idea would be to allow all of them to use whatever they want and a freak Olympics. Than anyone who wants a personal upgrade there aranabolic steroid. I'd get them myself if I knew there are no damaging side effects.

Jason, great post. Thanks for telling us more about Holliday's statistical track - I'll definitely be moving him down my draft list.

It will be interesting to do further analysis on this subject once the final 2008 stats are final. In the meantime, ESPN put out this interesting piece:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3615818

There are some good stats reference in there. In addition to the numbers is this priceless gem from Miguel Cabrera:

"I think it's the bigger stadiums," Cabrera said.

It would appear that the question with A-Rod is really one of longevity. If he can stay in the league for another 10 years and maintain a HR/AB productivity level of ~.07, he probably has a chance. He's probably not going to see a huge spike, like Bonds (there's the steroids argument..), so what we need to see out of him is a huge focus on health. Maybe we should take a look at the average number of games played per year with these same players? This season was the first time I can remember him missing a significant amount of games - if that's the tip of the iceberg and he gets injured a lot more often, he's probably done for.
